Fall is here and for teachers, that means it’s just about time to start administering beginning-of-year assessments. Now is a great time to determine your students’ skills so that you can better tailor your lessons to meet their specific needs and track progress throughout the school year.

For K–5 students, the free Screener of Handwriting Proficiency measures command of print and cursive handwriting skills. In just 10–15 minutes, the tool uses both formative and summative assessments to evaluate which areas of handwriting students need more practice in. Teachers can use the online scoring system to receive detailed reports on individual student or whole class area progress.

Not only does the Screener point out specific areas that students need to work on in order to have improved handwriting skills, it offers specific remediation strategies that teachers can use in their lessons. It’s best to test students’ handwriting skills not only at the beginning of the year, but also at the middle and end of the year. The Screener of Handwriting Proficiency works with all handwriting curricula.

For Pre-K students, our free Pre-K Assessments test early learners on the most important foundation skills including readiness and writing, language and literacy, and numbers and math. Assessments are designed distinctly for students just entering school and include developmentally-friendly language and evaluation methods. Students are asked to identify colors, pictures, numbers, shapes, and letters in a way that is easy to understand. Teachers are given evaluation charts to document each students’ skill level in each area. Our Pre-K Assessments also last only 10–15 minutes and should be given at the beginning, middle and end of the school year.
